Apologetics and the Godhead

Be Ready To Answer 1 Peter 3:15

1 Peter 3:15According to 1 Peter 3:15 we are to be ready to give a defense of the faith. “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;  having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed.

There are several requires to give a good defense of the faith.

First, we are to prepare the heart. Ezra prepared his heart to seek the Lord. (Ezra 7:10). The word sanctify in the verse above means to set apart a place in your mind for the defense of the faith. We have different rooms in our houses for each type of activity. We have the living or sitting room for sitting, and it has its own further. We have a kitchen for eating which also has its own furniture. We have bedrooms for sleeping, which also have their own future. Note that each is sanctified for a particular use.

In like manner, our minds must have a place set apart for the defense of the gospel. This means we prepare and enable ourselves to learn and defend the gospel.

Be Ready To Defend The Gospel

We must study carefully and thoroughly to be ready. Our readiness prepares us to both answer and defend. In discussions with those who oppose Christianity or who teach doctrines contrary to the faith, we must have an offense and a defense prepared. We need affirmative arguments and negative arguments. We should test them and rehearse them well to ensure they will bring about a good defense.

We should be no respecter of persons. Everyone needs to hear the gospel of Christ. Everyone needs to have their faith strengthened. Every needs to have their answers well prepared.

Ready To Pass The Integrity Test

Peter said we are to have a good conscience. This stems from having conduct that cannot be reproached. When egos are involved over long-held traditions and sacred-cows, people will get angry and begin to personally attack you. Some have no scruples and will do and say anything to intimidate you. They will defame you and revile you. But, you must so live that everything they say is a lie. When put to the test, they will be ashamed.

When you are ready to give and answer, ready to defend the gospel and ready to place your honor on the line, you should proceed. Don’t be afraid to engage. It is also important to remember, none are without sin. Automobiles have a reverse gear to change directions. Repentance is a reverse gear to change which allows a person who falls to return to God in righteousness and continue to serve.
